A pride of Jaguars
invade Monterey
For
three days in August Monterey, California is a car enthusiast's dreamland.
For this year in addition to the Jaguars racing at the Laguna Seca circuit
and those for sale in the various auctions a Jaguar class was added at
the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance.
The first event of
the weekend is Concorso Italiano held at the Quail Lodge resort and while
Italian cars take pride of place the event includes a selection of other
marques including a few Jaguars. The most unusual of which had to be a
wildly modified E type that the
owner had completed over a period of several years. Whilst not being to
everyone's taste as it was fitted with a Ford V8 engine the workmanship
was first class. One interesting feature was the eyes in the leaping jaguar
mascot lit up with the sidelights!! A full report can be found at Classic
Car News.
Over
at the Laguna Seca raceway the owners of racing Jaguars were practising
ready for the races on the weekend. With XK120s, C types, D types, E types,
Lister-Jaguars, a Hagemann-Jaguar and the Jaguar-Parkinson Special, not
forgetting the Ecurie Ecosse transporter shipped over from England there
was a good selection of interest to the Jaguar enthusiast. Results and
review of the races can be found here.
Each evening there
is an auction with those on the Friday and Saturday being organized by
the Monterey Auction Company. A variety of Jaguars were on offer including
a Mark 5 drophead, the D type that
was originally featured in Road and Track in the fifties, a selection
of XKs and a few E types. Despite a full American history and being in
concours condition the D type sold for less than a million dollars. A
full list of the Jaguars sold appears below and reviews of the RM
Auctions, Bonhams
and Christies.
Jaguars
at the Pebble Beach Concours have been limited in
the past with the occasional D type, XKSS, SS100 or special XK making
an appearance. This year however there was a Jaguar class that included
some of the most historic of the breed. JDHT brought a selection including
2 XK120s - NUB 120 and LWK 707, XJ13, Group 44 E type and a XJR9. The
E2A prototype, lightweight E type, C types, D types and the Ecurie Ecosse
transporter completed the racing display. Pre war fans could admire the
SS100 and film buffs were delighted to see the XKSS formerly owned by
Steve McQueen. Prizes were awarded to 1st - D type MWS 301, 2nd Ex Steve
McQueen XKSS, 3rd E type lighweight.
The Monterey weekend
represents an automobile enthusiasts' dreamland and returning to reality
is a real anti-climax. Still there is always next year.....
