Lap record eases heat on Jaguar

Jaguar's new formula one car has flown in the latest European tests, just as parent company Ford has turned up the heat on Australian Mark Webber's team to justify its existence with results. Three weeks out from the season-opening Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne, Webber's rookie teammate, Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, drove Jaguar's R4 model car to the top of the timesheets at Valencia in Spain. Pizzonia shaved 0.07 seconds off the lap record set earlier in the week by the Williams Colombian charger, Juan Pablo Montoya. Webber was quick in the Jaguar earlier in the week, but was not in action on Friday. Montoya was second fastest to Pizzonia, but more than a second off the pace set by the 22-year-old, who, ironically, was the Williams test driver before joining the Big Cat.

The latest pressure on Jaguar came with Ford announcing plans to slow the expansion of its luxury road car brands and switch the emphasis to cutting costs. Jaguar management will be restructured, despite Jaguar sales increasing dramatically in recent years. This comes after the dumping of triple world champion Niki Lauda, who had headed Jaguar for little more than a year, and 65 team staff. The news is certain to add to the pressure on Jaguar Racing. Jaguar's record in F1 since Ford bought the team founded by triple world champion driver Jackie Stewart three years ago has been poor, with only two podium finishes. It ditched both of its last year's drivers, Irish veteran Eddie Irvine and Spanish journeyman Pedro de la Rosa, in favour of cheaper and hungry youngsters Webber and Pizzonia. Webber's signing came after an impressive debut year with the struggling Australian-owned Minardi team.
